National Healthcare Decisions Day Urges Oklahomans to Plan Ahead for Medical Emergencies
WEATHERFORD, Okla. — As National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) approaches on April 16, Weatherford attorney Carissa King is urging families to take time now to plan for life’s unexpected medical moments—before it’s too late.
King, the founder of King Legal, PLLC, has spent years guiding families through the emotional and legal turmoil that can follow medical crises. In her experience, too many people postpone critical healthcare planning until it’s no longer an option.
“The most difficult conversations I have aren’t with families in the hospital – they’re with families weeks later, when they say through tears, ‘We thought we had more time,’” King said.
NHDD is a national initiative designed to inspire, educate, and empower the public and healthcare providers about the importance of advance care planning. According to King, while 80% of Americans believe talking about healthcare preferences is important, fewer than one-third have put those wishes in writing through legal documents like healthcare directives and powers of attorney.
That gap, she says, can leave families in turmoil.
“Without proper healthcare documents in place, even simple medical decisions can become sources of intense conflict,” King said. “I’ve watched siblings argue over what their parents really wanted, and spouses burdened with guilt, unsure if they’re honoring their loved one’s wishes.”
Beyond emotional strain, there are legal hurdles. Without a designated healthcare agent, Oklahoma’s default laws decide who makes medical decisions—sometimes putting critical choices in the hands of someone the patient wouldn’t have chosen.
“I’ve seen families have to go to court just to help with basic care decisions,” King added. “That’s time they should be spending at their loved one’s side.”
King encourages everyone—regardless of age or health—to take five important steps:
- Talk with loved ones about healthcare wishes.
- Choose a trusted healthcare agent.
- Complete legally valid advance directives.
- Make sure those documents are accessible.
- Review and update them regularly.
“The best time to discuss and document your healthcare wishes is now,” she said. “It’s one of the most loving gifts you can give your family.”
National Healthcare Decisions Day is recognized annually on April 16, the day after tax day, symbolizing that healthcare planning, like taxes, is something everyone should address.
