Western Plains Weatherford Genealogy Society will meet on Monday, February 24, 2025, at 7:00 pm in the Cedar School House, 520 West Main in Weatherford, Oklahoma, for its regular meeting.
The program will be a review presented by Charlene (Miller) Thornbrough of a book written by her sister, June (Miller) Shepard of Clinton about their father, Chas A. Miller, and their family growing up in Custer County during the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. June Shepard’s book, titled “I ‘Spect,” was published in 2017. Mrs. Shepard will attend the meeting and will be available to answer questions and sign copies of the book.
Charlene Thornbrough of Mountain View is a retired English teacher at Carnegie High School and an alumna of Clinton High School and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. June Shepard was an elementary school teacher in several county schools including Arapaho and Clinton Public Schools. Both sisters attended the one-room rural Mulberry School as children.
Dr. Ed Rolison, President of the Genealogy Society, said that “Mrs. Shepard’s book is an intimate memoir of the lives and experiences of one of the more prominent families of Custer County. In her telling of the story of the Miller and Shepard families, Mrs. Shepard shares much first-hand knowledge about rural schools and communities during the early days. This promises to be a fascinating program for anyone interested in family history. Our monthly meetings are free and open to the public. Everyone is invited.”
