Wellness programs, fitness resources, and student support earn university statewide recognition

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) has been named a Certified Healthy Campus by the Oklahoma State Department of Health, earning the Merit-level distinction for its ongoing efforts to promote a healthy, supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff.

The Certified Healthy Oklahoma program honors organizations across the state that implement effective wellness policies, foster supportive spaces, and provide access to health-related resources. SWOSU’s recognition reflects a broad commitment to well-being, from recreation and nutrition to mental health and employee wellness.

“This recognition demonstrates the university’s strong commitment to the health and well-being of its students, faculty, and staff,” said Susan Ellis, Director of SWOSU’s Center for Health & Well-being. “It signifies a proactive approach to creating a supportive environment that works to improve wellness across all aspects of campus life.”

A Campus-Wide Commitment to Health

At the heart of SWOSU’s health initiatives is the Wellness Center, which offers a wide array of fitness and recreational opportunities. Students and staff have access to:

  • Cardio and strength training equipment
  • Indoor basketball and volleyball courts
  • A walking/running track
  • A rock-climbing wall
  • Group fitness spaces

The facility also houses the Center for Health & Well-being, which runs programming focused on stress management, sleep hygiene, nutrition, and other critical wellness topics.

Outside the gym, the Bulldog Food and Resource Center provides vital support for students facing food insecurity, while the SWOSU Bulldog Wellness program engages the campus community with newsletters, benefits programming, and online wellness coaching.

What’s Next

As part of its recognition, SWOSU will receive an official certification from the state and be honored at a virtual Certified Healthy Oklahoma celebration in summer 2025. The event will bring together recognized organizations from across Oklahoma to share best practices and further develop health and wellness efforts.

The Certified Healthy Oklahoma initiative, led by the Oklahoma State Department of Health, works to improve the quality of life statewide by promoting health-conscious environments in schools, campuses, businesses, and more.
